Origin Story

Huehuetenango, located in the highlands of western Guatemala, is considered one of the country’s best coffee growing regions thanks to the dry, hot winds that sweep across the mountains from Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain, protecting the crops from frost. Abundant rainfall with a predictable dry season, and well-drained volcanic soil provide ideal growing conditions for the coffee plant. Since the introduction of coffee to Guatemala in the 1700’s, coffee has not only become a part of daily meals for the natives of Huehuetenango, it has also been bartered for trade and given as a gift for special occasions. Today a renewed emphasis on fair trade coffee is raising standards of living in the region and supporting a growing segment of women-run farms.
